Amazon is working on a standalone sports content app

Amazon is working on a standalone app for watching sports content, according to gadgets360.com reported Wednesday, citing a source with direct knowledge of the plan.

And sports continue to be one of the biggest draws to watch as American audiences increasingly switch from pay-TV subscriptions to streaming apps.

The move is likely to complement Amazon’s efforts to double down on sports programming with Prime Video, a key channel for attracting consumers to its shopping platform.

Amazon already owns the rights to broadcast games including the National Football League football franchise and English Premier League football matches in the UK, making it better able to compete with leading sports broadcaster Walt Disney.

Also last week, Alphabet’s YouTube unit inked a multi-year deal to stream the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package exclusively in the United States.

According to the report, it was not clear when Amazon would release the sports app and if it would go ahead with the plan.

The company is reviewing unprofitable business units and has laid off some employees to cover rising costs and slumping demand as consumers and businesses worried about inflation spend less.
