Maritime risk assessment firm Ambrey reported that war-related military objects found in the Black Sea doubled over six months, with a third carrying active explosive charges. The surge spans Romanian, Bulgarian, and Turkish waters, driven by intensifying drone strikes between Ukraine and Russia.
Surging Military Debris and Active Explosives Across Black Sea Waters
Maritime risk assessment firm Ambrey released a report detailing a sharp increase in military objects linked to the ongoing war washing ashore or drifting in the Black Sea. According to the company’s findings, 56 distinct objects were documented between March and August, compared to just 27 objects during the preceding six-month period. This escalation coincides with relentless aerial attacks and widespread drone warfare between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
The threat extends far beyond harmless metallic scrap or decoy structures. Ambrey revealed that approximately one-third of these drifting or beach-stranded items contained active explosive charges. The recovered hazards comprise unexploded ordnance, aerial drones, and unmanned watercraft, concentrated primarily in the maritime zones of Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey. An additional eight discoveries were logged during the first seven days of September alone.
Electronic Warfare and the Hazards Facing Civilian Crews

Alexa cautioned against civilian personnel attempting to evaluate these objects independently, emphasizing the severe dangers posed by modern military deception tactics. Crews cannot distinguish with the naked eye between a dummy airframe (for deception) and a real one, and they should not try to do so, Alexa warned, highlighting a documented incident where an unidentified military object became entangled in a local fishing crew’s nets.
Intensifying Regional Strikes and Civilian Toll
Russian forces launched intense missile and drone barrages targeting the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, resulting in five deaths and multiple injuries according to local officials. Simultaneously, overnight drone strikes hit the Starokozatشي land border crossing in the Odesa region near Moldova, killing two people, injuring three others, and forcing a complete closure of the facility due to heavy structural damage.
On the opposing side, Ukraine maintained sustained aerial campaigns against Russian territory. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that its air defense systems intercepted 596 Ukrainian drones in a single night, targeting over 10 Russian regions alongside the Crimean Peninsula. This dual escalation of cross-border bombardments explains the constant influx of airborne and aquatic military debris tumbling into regional waters.
