An American novelist who wrote an article entitled “How to Kill Your Husband” began serving a life sentence after being convicted of killing her husband.
Nancy Crampton Brophy will have to wait at least 25 years before she can apply for parole, a judge in a court in the northwestern Oregon state told her.
The writer, who has released romance novels with sensational titles such as “Hell at Heart” or “Bad Husband”, was convicted on May 25 of murdering her husband, Danielle Brophy, by shooting him in June 2018 at a culinary college where he worked.
Prosecutors said the novelist followed her husband to work and shot him with a Glock pistol. Investigators found two 9mm shell casings at the scene, according to CNN.
She also purchased a “stealth rifle” assembly kit that investigators later found in a storage facility. “Ghost guns” are unregistered and untraceable firearms. On the other hand, Crumpton Brophy denied the charge during her trial, saying that their presence at the crime scene, according to CCTV footage at the scene, was intended for inspiration in her writing.
She also claimed that a missing pistol that police believed to be the murder weapon had been purchased in preparation for writing a novel, and denied that hundreds of thousands of dollars she would have earned from insurance contracts were a motive for the murder.
