An alcoholic dog was rescued to treat his addiction

So Coco, a two-year-old cross between a Labrador and a stray, was brought to the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust in Plympton after the death of his owner. Together with Coco they brought another dog that had been attacked.

Despite the care of the institution’s staff, Coco’s friend unfortunately died. It was at this time that she began the long road of recovery that she received treatment for alcohol withdrawal syndrome.

Rescue center staff kept Coco sedated for four weeks to prevent further seizures. At the moment, it is unknown how the dogs became addicted to alcohol. It is also not known how regularly she drank alcohol.

In a social media post, staff at the Woodside Animal Rescue Trust said: “Canine alcohol withdrawal, a first for us.”

They added: “We would like to introduce you to the newest member of the Dunroamin Special Care Unit, a lovely boy named Coco. He has been with us for over a month and has required intensive care ever since he arrived. His tragic story shows just how vital our unit is. of special care”.

They also indicated that “after arriving with his canine companion after the death of his owner, he and his companion quickly became ill. Coco’s friend would fit repeatedly and soon after Coco began to do so too.”

“Fortunately, there was a vet on site at the time who was able to administer emergency care, but unfortunately Coco’s friend passed away despite our efforts,” the vets concluded.

After Coco spent the four weeks sedated to alleviate the withdrawal symptoms, the entity reported that the dog has stopped taking the medication and is beginning to normalize its behavior.

However, “he is not yet ready for adoption and although physically he appears to have recovered, mentally he remains very anxious at times,” the statement said.

Finally, they assured that “having the Dunroamin Unit has meant that he has been able to care for him in a more homely environment and far from the main kennels. Coco’s case deserves it due to its seriousness.”
