British researchers have developed a tsunami early warning system. By using an AI to analyze the sound waves produced by earthquakes, they can determine their characteristics and the risk of a tsunami much more quickly.

Current tsunami warning systems use seismic sensors to detect earthquakes. All earthquakes do not generate tsunamis, it is then a network of tide gauges that detects the arrival of the wave. This leaves little time to evacuate the affected populations. In an article published in the journal Physics of Fluidsresearchers at Cardiff University in Wales have developed a new approach that determines tsunami risk as soon as an earthquake is detected.

The researchers used hydrophones, microphones that work underwater, placed in the Pacific Ocean by the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). Normally, they are used to detect possible nuclear explosions.

An AI to analyze sound waves

The sound waves produced by 200 earthquakes were analyzed with machine learning algorithms to determine their acoustic signature. Using this data, the AI was able to locate the epicenter, classify the slip type and magnitude, as well as calculate width and length, vertical speed and duration. This helps determine the size of the tsunami, and reduces the risk of false alerts. ” Tectonic events with strong vertical slip are more likely to raise or lower the water column than horizontal slips “said Bernabe Gomez Perez, one of the authors of the article.

This early warning model will be used alongside the traditional warning system, and will be integrated into software that will be installed in warning centers later this year.
