The animal was spotted by a school security guard on Monday morning. After contacting the elder of the Turgeliai ward, the latter summoned the members of the Hunting Club of the Šalčininkai district. They safely removed the beaver from the school grounds.

At the end of March, a brave beaver was also spotted in Palanga. That time, the lecturer of the Academy of Agriculture of Vytautas Magnus University (VDU ŽŪA) was dr. Artūras Kibiša for the portal lrytas.lt said that such bravery of a beaver is not characteristic of representatives of this species.

“Maybe they are looking for new places, trying to settle somewhere else. It is possible that it has adapted to people, intensively populated places, but it is likely that it is simply forced to look for a new habitat. We haven’t had rabies in Lithuania for a long time, so I don’t think that this disease had an influence on such behavior”, A. Kibiša thought.

The specialist also reassured and said that there is really no need to be afraid of beavers, but, like all other wild animals, you should not try to catch them or corner them by force.

“During the hunt, when the beaver is caught with a grapple and the only thing left to do is defend itself, there have been various cases – it has bitten both the leg and the arm. However, this is an emergency situation. You really shouldn’t attack people, but all kinds of situations happen.

If someone tried to catch him or corner him, the consequences could be a bitten leg,” warned A. Kibiša.

However, the specialist added, such guests do not benefit the city. If a beaver decides to settle there, the trees and bushes in the city can suffer.

“If a beaver decides to settle in the city, it should definitely be evicted with the help of environmental protection inspectors,” said A. Kibiša.
