Analyzing the Rise of Hate Speech Against LGBTIQ+ Diversity: A Report by LLYC Consultancy

A report from the LLYC consultancy analyzed the conversations around the LGBTIQ+ diversity in 13 countries, including Chile, and how hate speech against the community evolves.

The report, which studied 169.2 million messages, reported that since 2019, our country is the second where a increase in the percentage of hate speech on social networks, reaching a 13%.

According to the measurement, globally it was observed a 41% global drop in the volume of support messages. Likewise, and from the same year, hate speech grew by 9%.

The profile of those who amplify hate speech online

The narratives of the promoting and detracting communities were also analyzed by the consultant. Among the main data was the peak of conversations on Twitter.

The peak of conversation volume was registered in the month of June, due to the protests for LGBTIQ+ Pride. In this sense, it was concluded thatn June 2019, the volume of messages from the detractor community grew by 140%.

In contrast, the volume of messages from the promoter community grew only 62% compared to the previous month.

Likewise, and in June 2022, the increase in promotional messages reached 79% compared to the previous month. Thus surpassing detractor messages (69% compared to the previous month).

Along these lines, the main promoting narratives talk about explicit support for the President of the United States, Joe Biden, for the LGBTIQ+ community, support for the trans collective, Pride parades around the world, and the promotion of respect for the diverse gender identities.

While otherwise, the detracting narratives opine on the aversion or hatred towards the LGBTIQ+ community, the campaign of “gender ideology”, criticism of the “privileges” of the group and adoption by homoparental couples.

According to the consultant, Chile is the second country where the detractive conversation against the community grew the most (50.76%), only surpassed by Ecuador (61.3%).

This analysis of the conversation in Chile during 2019 to 2022, concluded that the developer community grew by 41.4% while the detractor community grew by 117.5%.
