Researchers analyzing artifacts from 33 Greek archaeological sites dating back from 3 to 4 tys. lat temu have identified 10 seal rings crafted from meteoric iron. Utilizing X-ray fluorescence, scientists discovered high nickel concentrations up to 50 percent, providing the first hard evidence that Bronze Age Greek civilizations utilized extraterrestrial metal.
But a team consisting of astrophysicist and chemist Matthieu Gounelle and researcher Eleni Mantzourani from the French Museum of Natural History in Paris just expanded that material palette quite literally into the cosmos.

Out of the 91 artifacts screened across Greek archaeological repositories, exactly 13 items displayed elevated nickel markers. Further structural analysis confirmed that 10 of these objects were indisputably forged from space rocks, while three others remain under active laboratory review. These weren’t crude implements, either. Every single confirmed meteoric iron artifact was fashioned into a ring or a ring fragment, frequently anchored to a larger, flat, engraved metal plate that served as a functional seal ring.

Meteorite impacts are exceptionally rare across Crete and mainland Greece. This geological scarcity implies that the raw material had to travel immense distances before reaching Aegean artisans. According to the study’s findings, this cosmic metal likely moved along established trade routes originating in Egypt, illuminating a sophisticated commercial corridor connecting North Africa and the Aegean during the Bronze Age.
The archaeological context of these discoveries speaks volumes about social stratification. Excavators recovered the rings from elite tombs and temple ruins situated in southern Greece and Crete. Artisans frequently laminated the meteoric core with thin layers of gold and silver. Instead, it functioned as an exclusive status symbol reserved strictly for the ruling class, high-ranking spiritual leaders, and the administrative elite.
The Collapse of Late Bronze Age Metallurgy
History has a habit of erasing its own supply chains. Archaeologists noted a complete absence of meteoric iron rings dated past the 12th century BCE in the Aegean region. This hard chronological cutoff points directly to the systemic disruptions of the Late Bronze Age collapse.
