Anglo American ship with sustainable fuel technology is received for the first time in Brazil

The Anglo American ship MV Ubuntu Loyalty, which uses Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel, made its maiden voyage docking in Brazilian territory, this Monday (01/05). The vessel was received at the iron ore port terminal managed by Ferroport, at Porto do Açu, in São João da Barra (RJ). This was the first time that a ship with this type of sustainable technology docked in Brazil.

According to studies by the mining company, the use of LNG provides an estimated reduction of 35% in greenhouse gas emissions, compared to vessels powered by conventional marine fuel. In all, Anglo American’s Ubuntu fleet, which was designed from 2019, comprises ten ships, with six already in operation around the world.

The Anglo American vessel, which received a shipment of iron ore at the Port of Açu (RJ), uses Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

“This innovation is a milestone for the entire Anglo American Group and is in direct dialogue with our Sustainable Mining Plan, which aims, among its various objectives, to be carbon neutral by 2040, taking into account the direct emissions of the business and fuel consumed” , explains Wilfred Bruijn, CEO of Anglo American in Brazil.

With its final destination in China, the dual-fuel vessel Ubuntu Loyalty received a load of 175,000 tons of iron ore from Minas-Rio. The port operation was conducted by Ferroport, a joint venture between Anglo American and Prumo Logística.

Docking at the Ferroport terminal

“This is also a memorable moment at Ferroport, as it is the first LNG vessel received by the terminal. The ore crossed one of the largest pipelines in the world, 529 km long, to be shipped to Asia. This ship is in line with our commitment to safe and sustainable operations”, emphasizes Carsten Bosselmann, CEO of Ferroport.

The ore terminal was the first to start operating at the Açu port development and is a reference in terms of efficiency and sustainability in its operations. According to the National Agency for Waterway Transport (Antaq), it is the fourth Private Use Terminal (TUP) in handling iron ore in Brazil. With a depth of 20.5 meters in its berths, Porto do Açu can receive Panamax and Capesize vessels, with a capacity of up to 220 thousand tons
