Animal Welfare Violation: Owner Indicted and Facing Up to 3 Years in Prison

Our colleagues from L’Avenir announced this morning the indictment of the owner. The King’s Prosecutor of Walloon Brabant, Marc Rézette, confirms that the investigating judge has indicted her for violation of the Walloon code relating to animal welfare. Several violations were noted. The facts must now be examined – in particular via veterinary reports – and qualified. It is on the basis of this instruction that the file will then be transmitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

In all likelihood, the owner should be referred to the criminal court. She risks a prison sentence of up to 3 years as well as fines which could amount to 1 million euros (this amount being affected by a coefficient which multiplies the said sum by 8).

Finally, and this was the wish expressed by animal rights associations, it is expected that the forfeiture of the right to keep animals will be pronounced against him.
