The president of the Turkish first division club Ankaragücü has resigned after his physical attack on a referee.

“No matter how great the injustice may have been, how flawed the management, nothing can justify the violence that I perpetrated,” Faruk Koca said on Tuesday evening via the club’s channels.

After the 1-1 draw against Rizespor on Monday, Koca punched referee Halil Umut Meler in the face so badly that he received a black eye. Other people also kicked the referee who had fallen to the ground. The Turkish Football Association TFF suspended the Süper Lig game operations indefinitely.

“I would like to apologize to the Turkish refereeing community, the sports public and our nation,” said Koca. The association has already announced the “strictest” sanctions.
