One of the television advertisements sparked widespread controversy over the past few days, after it re-presented the famous song by the late artist Abdel Halim Hafez, “Dakwa Al-Shamasi,” in the voice of the young Egyptian actress and singer Malak Al-Husseini, in a way that some saw as a distortion of the original song.

The song “Daqwa Al-Shamasi” was previously performed by Abdel Halim Hafez, as part of the events of the movie “My Father Above the Tree” in 1969. It was written by the poet Morsi Jamil Aziz and composed by Mounir Murad.

Secretary General of the Egyptian Authors and Composers Association, the poet Fawzi Ibrahim, told Al-Sharq, “The association has already granted a permit to the producing company, as it does with all advertisements, but with conditions that it has not implemented,” explaining that “the company submitted a request that it wants to exploit the song without prejudice to the melody.” “With some words changed, but we were surprised by changing the melody to a Western one.”

He added, “The association’s council met on Saturday and addressed the company with the need to commit not to prejudice the tune and to amend the advertisement immediately. This is a first step and will be followed by other steps if there is no response.”

For his part, Muhammad Shabana, Abdel Halim Hafez’s nephew, expressed his strong dissatisfaction with the announcement, stressing that he intends to take legal measures against those responsible for it.

Shabana told Al-Sharq: “I have already informed the family’s legal advisor to take immediate action against this farce, but I am surprised that it was allowed to be shown by the censorship of works,” demanding the necessity of “stopping the advertisement because it is tantamount to distorting the career of the Nightingale.”
