Apple bans AI app impersonating Meta’s Threads

O Threadsnew social network Meta to compete with the Twitterwas released earlier this month in several countries, including Brazil. In a few hours, as we reported, the app saw millions of new users — an attention that, of course, was enough to attract people with the intention of surfing this popularity.

More than that, perhaps also due to the fact that Threads has not yet been made available in Europasome artificial intelligence applications are trying to take advantage of impersonating the new social network.

One of them is the Threads for Instadeveloped by SocialKit TLD and which has been removed from App Store for trying to impersonate the social network, as information from TechCrunch. The app itself allowed you to create publications through AI-powered templates — but it used the Threads name and logo in the advertisement.

As noticed by the Mysk developers, the app reached the top of the ranking of most downloaded apps in the social networks category of the App Store in countries such as Germany, Spain, France, Netherlands and Sweden.

Related note: Meta has not released Threads in the EU.

Also according to them, the application obtained 300,000 downloads in a short period of time — mainly from users in Europe. After the ban, the developers also noted that Apple suspended the developer account — removing all other apps made by them.

The fake “Threads for Insta” was downloaded at least 300,000 times before Apple silently removed it.
Isn’t the App Store obligated to explain why the app was removed, at least just to the victims who downloaded it? This will raise awareness and educate users on how to avoid these scams.

Copying apps with increasing popularity is not a recent trend in the App Store. Earlier this year, several apps with “ChatGPT” in their name took advantage of the explosion of chatbot from OpenAI — which at the time had not yet released an official application — to try to gain followers illegitimately.

This just goes to show that, even on secure platforms such as the App Store, one must be careful and pay extra attention when downloading an application — and, if possible, check on other channels (such as the web or social networks) for information confirming the existence of a legitimate and official app.
