Apple accelerated its new Mac mini and Mac Studio desktop launches on August 25, 2026, following an unexpected surge in enterprise AI demand that strained supply chains and left configurations out of stock for months.

Apple’s decision to break from its traditional autumn release schedule by unveiling refreshed desktop hardware in late August was triggered by a wave of business and developer appetite for local AI hardware. According to reporting from The Information cited across multiple outlets, the sudden rush caught corporate leadership by surprise, leaving the company without a dedicated enterprise engineering team or formal developer relations strategy.
Normally, Apple releases new Mac models in autumn, closer to October or November, but this year, the announcement of the new products came earlier. Apple noticeably promoted the ability to link multiple Mac Studios together into a single, more capable system for running large frontier AI models, a feature aimed at business and developer customers rather than everyday consumers. Apple highlighted the Mac mini and Mac Studio’s shift toward business buyers in June, with a Business at the Park
event involving executives from major companies Ford, Disney, and Anthropic. The Mac mini was said to be the “darling” of the event.
Apple has dropped 3 press releases in one night: a new Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro, a new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra, and the silicon underneath both. Pre-orders opened today. Machines land 22 September, with the 512GB Mac Studio arriving late October.
The M6 Chip Architecture and the Mac Mini Redesign
The centerpiece of the refreshed ultracompact desktop is the M6 processor, which marks Apple’s first 2-nanometer part built on TSMC’s N2 node. The chip carries a 12-core CPU split into two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores, which is 2 more cores than M5.
Against the prior generation, Apple claims the world’s fastest single-threaded core, 1.2x the multithreaded performance of M5 and 2.4x that of M1. With M6, Mac mini now delivers up to 4x faster AI performance, 2x faster storage and graphics, and 40 percent faster CPU performance. The 12-core GPU now has a Neural Accelerator in every core, worth close to 30% more peak GPU compute for AI than M5 and more than 8x M1, alongside a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.
Mac mini with M5 Pro delivers even more pro-level performance to breeze through demanding projects, from video production to game development. Both Mac mini models include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, as well as upgraded 2.5Gb Ethernet, with a 10Gb option available, combined with the power of macOS 27 and the next generation of Apple Intelligence.
The Mac Studio and M5 Ultra Architecture
For heavier professional workloads, Apple expanded the desktop lineup with a new Mac Studio powered by the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. Forbes noted that Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had flagged the Mac mini refresh but said nothing about a Mac Studio or an M5 Ultra, as Apple kept half of its own launch quiet.
Apple Desk-Side AI Computers
Apple has built a desk-side AI computer product line, priced it from A$1,449 to A$9,499, and stopped pretending that’s a side effect. The Mac Mini launched with Apple’s all-new M6 processor or the M5 Pro chip. The M6 version can be outfitted with up to 32GB of memory, while the M5 Pro gets up to 64GB, and the Mac Studio gets Apple’s M5 Max and new M5 Ultra processors.

Mac Business Revenue in 2025
The rush of corporate buyers toward desktop Macs coincided with a period where certain models have become increasingly hard to find in stores, bringing these Macs back into stock after being difficult to buy for most of this year. Apple’s Mac business brought in $33.7 billion in 2025, making it the company’s fourth-largest business by revenue, while the iPhone brought in $209.5 billion of the company’s $416.1 billion total.
