Apple has launched the new iPhone 15 phones, which come with a big change after Apple was forced by the European Commission to switch to the USB-C connector. The new phones don’t come with revolutionary news, but they promise better cameras, faster processors and batteries that last longer between charges.

The iPhone 15 has a 6.1-inch screen, and the iPhone 15 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen.
The iPhone 15 costs from $799 in the US, and the iPhone 15 Plus from $899. iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999 in the US (128GB); and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, from $1,199 (256 GB storage). Orders can be made from September 15, and deliveries start from September 22. The iPhone 15 Pro Max price is $100 higher than the one announced for the Pro Max model released a year ago.
To comply with EU legislation, which will come into effect in 2024, the iPhone 15 phones have a USB-C charging port, instead of Lightning, the standard on iPhones since 2012, when it was introduced on the iPhone 5. Until then, the iPhone had the 30-pin connector that had debuted on the iPod.
Other Apple products also have USB-C, and this standardization is intended to help customers avoid the need for a multitude of different cables. Apple initially protested this obligation to change plugs, but complied. In the presentation, talking about USB-C, Apple excitedly said that with the same cable you can charge many types of devices, such as iPhone, Mac or iPad.
The iPhone 15 now has a 48 MP main camera, wide, an important change compared to previous years.
iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will be available in the following colors: yellow, pink, green, blue and black. The company says the battery will last “all day” and that the battery is bigger, but didn’t give percentages.
iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have the A16 Bionic processor, present last year on the most expensive iPhone models.
The top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone Pro Max models have a titanium case and, thanks to this alloy, are lighter. The iPhone 15 Pro has a 6.1-inch screen, and the iPhone 15 Pro has a 6.7-inch screen. “It’s titanium like the one used on the Mars rover,” Apple says. The two have the new A17 Pro processor.
Apple iPhone 15 Pro will be available in four color variants.
The company is announcing improvements to the iPhone 15 Pro cameras, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max model has a 5X, 120mm telephoto camera. The iPhone 15 Pro model has 3X optical zoom.
The Dynamic Island view in the top center of the screen, present in the generation launched in autumn 2022 on Pro models, is now on all models.
The presentation was, as Apple is used to, full of hyperbole: “the most sophisticated”, “the thinnest”, “the best performing”, “the fastest”, “fantastic” “revolutionary. Magic Island has been defined as “magical”.
At the start of the live on YouTube there were a million people watching, and when the iPhone presentation started it was over 2.5 million.
Apple had over $205 billion in sales last year thanks to the iPhone. In terms of units, America was in first place with 100 million, and 56 million were sold in Europe. Apple has a market capitalization of $2.77 trillion.
More than 1.3 million iPhones are currently in use worldwide, of which 150 million are in the US. The iPhone’s share of the smartphone market is growing and approaching 20%.
More than 232 million iPhones were sold worldwide in the last year, with the best quarter being the last in 2022, with 72 million units. The best quarter in the 16-year history of iPhones was last in 2020, with more than 90 million units sold. The weakest quarter in five years was the second quarter of 2019, with 33 million units shipped.
Apple had total revenue of $394 billion last year, double from 2014 and six times more than in 2010.
