Breaking News: Apple Adds Energy Labels to iPhones and iPads in Compliance with EU Regulations
Apple has just announced a significant update to its Italian website, introducing energy labels for its iPhones and iPads. This move aligns with the new European Union regulations that came into effect on June 20, 2025. The energy labels, similar to those found on household appliances and TVs, are now visible on the pages dedicated to iPhones and iPads across all official Apple sites in Europe, including Norway and Switzerland.
New EU Regulations Drive Transparency
The new EU regulations aim to enhance environmental transparency by mandating that manufacturers provide clear data on energy consumption, battery life, repairability, and durability among other factors. Each device receives an energy efficiency score from A (maximum efficiency) to G, based on criteria established by the European Commission.
Apple has adopted a cautious approach by voluntarily downgrading some scores from A to B to avoid discrepancies with independent tests and varying interpretations of parameters. This approach also applies to other metrics such as impact resistance and repairability.
What the Energy Labels Include
The new labels, prominently displayed with a small colored icon next to the device name, provide key information like overall energy efficiency, battery life per charge, repairability, impact resistance, dust and water certifications (IP rating), and the number of complete battery cycles guaranteed.
Clicking on the icon allows users to download a detailed PDF that includes additional technical data such as battery capacity, scratch resistance, minimum years guaranteed for security updates, and other environmental and construction parameters.
Physical Labels on Packaging
In addition to their online presence, these labels must also be physically printed and included in the packaging of devices sold throughout the European Union, Norway, and Switzerland.
Apple has expressed support for the transparency initiative but has noted that some evaluation criteria are still unclear or difficult to standardize. The company is taking a cautious approach until more precise test methods are established.
Historical Change for European Consumers
This change marks a new level of awareness for European consumers, who are increasingly focused on the sustainability and longevity of their electronic devices. The introduction of energy labels is expected to empower consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions.
