A Qualcomm announced today that the partnership agreement Apple for supply of modems has been renewed for more three yearsin order to “cover smartphone launches in 2024, 2025 and 2026”.
The agreement between the companies, it is worth noting, was scheduled to end this year, so the line “iPhone 15” — whose launch will take place tomorrow (12/9) — was one of the last to feature Qualcomm modems.
This agreement reinforces Qualcomm’s track record of sustained leadership in 5G technologies and products.
For Apple, the deal renewal suggests that building its own modem has been more challenging than expected. More precisely, the company started the project in 2017 and then reinforced it with the acquisition of Intel’s smartphone chip business. In 2020, Apple announced the development of its own modem as a “fundamental strategic transition”, but some problems subsequently emerged.
Some analysts expected the Apple component to be ready this year, but this hypothesis was discarded last year. In that sense, although the new contract extends until 2026, Apple could still start using its own modem before then. According to journalist Mark Gurman, from Bloombergthe company “plans to roll out the component gradually.”
In fact, according to Qualcomm’s own predictions, it will have a share of just 20% in Apple’s business when the 2026 iPhones are launched, which also indicates the simultaneous use of modems from Apple and the manufacturer.
