Apple security chief again accused of bribery with iPads

Back in 2020, Apple’s head of global security, Thomas Moyerwas accused of involvement in a bribery scheme to obtain firearms licenses — which four Apple employees had previously been denied.

The situation generated an internal inquiry at Apple, as well as a lawsuit, so that, in both, Moyer was acquitted of the accusations for lack of evidence that really proves that he had promised to donate 200 iPads to agents of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office in the US state of California.

The case, however, resurfaced — more than two years after it was filed — after a challenge from the Santa Clara District Attorney, Jeff Rosen, according to information from Bloomberg. According to the report, a state appeals panel composed of three judges ruled that the lower court decision, in 2021, should not have rejected the bribery charge.

That appeal raises a question not yet addressed by any California court: whether a public official can be bribed with a promise to donate to his office. We conclude that such a promise may constitute a bribe.

Rosen also commented on the most recent development of the case:

Moyer is back where he should be: on trial calendar and accused of bribery.

Both Moyer’s lawyer (Ed Swanson) and Apple had no comment on the reopening of the case. We will, of course, continue to follow developments on this.
