Apple should better manage the disappearance of games on Apple Arcade: bye bye The Pathless or Warp Drive

Did you know that Apple occasionally removes games from Apple Arcade? This is not new, we were talking about it in 2022, but Apple’s way of communicating on this subject (rather than not communicating) can cause problems.

The Pathless, NBA 2K21 Arcade Edition, Ocean Horn : The Labyrinth of Kronos or Warp Drive have in fact recently left Apple Arcade and Apple has not really communicated on this point. We actually discovered it by accident: The Pathless is an excellent title which had the advantage of very well supporting controllers under iOS – with detection of the type of layout, vibrations, etc. — and so we wanted to test the Amazon Luna controller with him. But the game (still installed) did not accept to launch.

(oops) It was perfect for controllers.

A search later, an observation emerges: it is no longer available on Apple Arcade… and above all is no longer available at all. Apple explain well that it is possible for games to return to the App Store in a traditional way, but this is not an obligation. And instead of the game disappearing quietly, we would have appreciated two things: a notification to indicate the upcoming removal of the title (like what streaming services offer, for example) and – above all – a notification to specify that a installed game can no longer be launched. In the case of The Pathlessit requires 9.4 GB on a Mac’s SSD, for nothing.

And beyond the quiet disappearance, it is sad to see The Pathless Faint: This is a great title that is available in physics sur PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch. And at least, in these two specific cases, the game should remain usable in the future… unless Sony or Nintendo decide to close the servers linked to the consoles.
