Apple has officially introduced a physical variable aperture system in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max main cameras, marking the company’s first move away from fixed-lens smartphone photography toward genuine optical aperture control following months of industry anticipation.
Fifteen months after early patent filings surfaced regarding compact camera optics, Apple announced its new flagship device lineup on September 9, 2026, introducing a 48MP Fusion Main camera equipped with a physical variable aperture. The feature represents a rare addition to the smartphone market, where devices have traditionally relied entirely on computational imaging and fixed lenses to manage exposure and depth of field.
Hardware Design and Mechanical Implementation in the iPhone 18 Pro
The primary camera on the iPhone 18 Pro series utilizes six mechanical aperture blades constructed from a polymer composite that are thinner than a human hair. Driven by a rotor mechanism, the hardware can smoothly transition between aperture positions, allowing the system to adjust automatically to ambient lighting conditions and the desired depth of field.
Users can also manually select from four aperture settings through the Camera app. A physical iris introduces another genuine optical variable into the system, allowing more control over depth of field and light transmission for photographers and providing another way to control exposure while maintaining a preferred shutter speed for filmmakers.
While the commercial product successfully brings physical aperture control to mobile users, the actual implementation differs from initial intellectual property filings. In June 2025, Y.M.Cinema reported on an Apple patent titled Camera Module With Variable Lens Aperture With Soft Membrane,
which described replacing traditional overlapping blades with a flexible membrane whose opening could expand or contract through a rotor and actuator system. Apple’s stated objectives included reducing size, weight and mechanical complexity while maintaining a more circular aperture.
The iPhone 18 Pro does not appear to use the soft-membrane aperture described in the patent covered in 2025. Apple’s production design uses six conventional mechanical blades, while the patent specifically proposed replacing overlapping blades with a flexible membrane.
Industry Context and Pro Max Hardware Speculation
Until now, all iPhones, and indeed the majority of smartphones, feature a fixed-lens aperture. The main camera in the iPhone 17 Pro ($1,210.40 on Amazon), for example, has a bright f/1.78 aperture. From the iPhone 14 Pro through the iPhone 17 Pro, the main camera has used a fixed f/1.78 aperture. With no control over aperture size, and with small sensors, most phones including iPhone rely on computational photography to get effects such as background blur or punchy low light shots.

While variable aperture remains uncommon across mainstream smartphones, it is a rarity in smartphones—Huawei equips several of its flagship devices with one, including its Pura 80 Ultra and other current models.
Ahead of the official unveiling, industry reports indicated that the hardware might be restricted due to spatial constraints. GSMArena reported that Apple may reserve the rumoured variable-aperture primary camera for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, citing a claim from tipster Ice Universe. The feature was expected to be included in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, but the latest leak suggested that Apple could make it exclusive to the top-end Pro Max model. According to the tipster, the variable-aperture camera would require additional internal space, which could only be accommodated in the larger Pro Max model, though no further details about the camera upgrade had been revealed. The tipster had previously claimed that the iPhone 18 Pro Max would weigh 240g and measure 9mm in thickness, making it slightly heavier and thicker than the current iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The tipster said this would not be the first time the tech giant had reserved a camera upgrade for the Pro Max model. In 2023, the iPhone 15 Pro Max featured a tetraprism telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro was limited to a 3x optical zoom telephoto camera.
Ahead of its annual September event, Apple also launched a lottery for US employees who want to participate in its Event Support Experience Programme. Those selected will travel to Apple Park and assist with the company’s in-person media gathering, MacRumors reported. The employees will be tasked with helping organize queues, checking in guests, guiding attendees, welcoming visitors and assisting security personnel during the event. Apple told staff that the gathering is expected to be held in the first half of September.
