Registration for the third Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge (Sowing the Future Challenge of the World Food System) are now open. Founded by Seeding The Future Foundation and organized by Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), the Challenge invites scientists, engineers, innovators, entrepreneurs and multidisciplinary teams from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), not-for-profit organizations, social enterprises, universities, research institutions, as well as small and emerging for-profit companies, to deliver breakthrough innovations that will help transform the food system.
The Challenge targets high-impact innovations that lead to significant advances in one or more of the following domains: safe and nutritious food for a healthy diet; sustainable practices including reducing food loss/waste; and access to affordable, attractive and reliable food for consumers. Applications close on August 1st.
“Transformational change is urgently needed to create food systems that improve the health of people and the planet. All breakthrough innovations start with seeds of ideas that need support to grow and become impactful. This is the foundation on which the Challenge is built. To encourage innovation at all levels, from idea generation to development and scaling, the Challenge offers three tiers of prizes totaling up to $1 million:
- Starter grants ($25,000 each) will be awarded to organizations that create innovative ideas and have developed an initial prototype or proof of concept, demonstrating that their idea is viable and impactful at scale.
- Growth grants ($100,000 each) will be awarded to organizations that have demonstrated that their innovation is feasible, scalable and have projected economic viability at scale as well as high potential to be transformative in impacting people’s health and the environment.
- Sowing the Future Grand Prizes ($250,000 each) will be awarded to organizations that have created innovations that are economically viable at scale, trusted by consumers and demonstrated great potential for impact, benefiting the lives and health of people and the environment.

WorldFish (grand prize): “We join this challenge as we believe our approach to making small fish available and accessible to children and women is a solution that can help many communities cope with nutrient deficits, particularly during a worldwide pandemic when people have lost their livelihoods, further exacerbating food shortages and food insecurity. International Rice Research Institute (grande prêmio): “The GFSC award was validation that recognized the importance of our work and helped our team significantly accelerate our efforts to make several arsenic-safe varieties of rice available free of charge. We were also able to share the knowledge we have with national agencies so that improvement programs to exclude arsenic from rice grains can be integrated with the goal of benefiting most stakeholders, in particular rice farmers and consumers..” – Dr. Jauhar Ali, Senior Scientist and Coordinator of the IRRI Arsenic Safe Rice Project.
iDE (growth allowance): “iDE’s recognition as a winner of Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge brought significant attention to the organization and its efforts to tackle food system challenges.
