Young, employed and in debt: When premiums become a problem
The increase in health insurance premiums is hitting young adults and people with low incomes hard. Why they have a particularly difficult time paying off debt.
Switzerland is experiencing a premium shock: in 2024, health insurance premiums will rise by an average of 8.7 percent – more than ever since 2010. This is particularly felt by the lower middle class. Young adults are also noticeably affected by debt. Outstanding health insurance premiums are among the biggest debt traps in Switzerland.
Why is it that health insurance premiums often lead to debt? What do those affected say about the upcoming premium increase? And why is it so hard to get out of debt?
Business editor Beatrice Bösiger spoke to two young men who are in debt themselves or have only just been able to pay off debts with difficulty. In the daily podcast “Apropos” she tells her stories and explains the measures politicians are taking to better protect young people from indebtedness. The host is Mirja Gabathuler.
