On the night of April 22, at 1:30, at the age of 71, His Eminence Archbishop Artemy (Kishchenko), who headed the Grodno cathedra from February 4, 1996 to June 9, 2021, died in the hospital.

Farewell to Archbishop Artemy will be held at the Holy Intercession Cathedral in Grodno on Ozheshko Street from 13:00 on April 23 to 12:00 on April 24.

On Monday, April 24 at 08:00 at the Holy Intercession Cathedral in Grodno, the Divine Liturgy will begin, after which a funeral service will be performed.

At 12:00 the coffin with the body of the deceased will be transported to Minsk to the Chizhovskoye cemetery. At 15:00, a funeral litia will be performed, after which the burial of Archbishop Artemy will take place.

According to the will, the deceased will be buried next to the graves of relatives.

Archbishop Artemy (in the world Alexander Anatolyevich Kishchenko) was born on April 25, 1952 in Minsk. After graduating from high school in 1969, he entered the Belarusian Institute of Mechanization and Electrification of Agriculture, completed 3 courses. After serving in the Soviet Army (1975-1976) he was a novice of the Pskov-Caves Monastery.

In 1976 he entered the Leningrad Theological Seminary.

On October 8, 1978, in the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian of the Leningrad Theological Academy, His Eminence Kirill, Archbishop of Vyborg, Rector of the Leningrad Theological Academy and Seminary, was tonsured a reader.

In 1979 he was enrolled in the Leningrad Theological Academy.

On January 3, 1996, His Eminence Metropolitan Philaret in the Holy Dormition Zhirovichi Monastery was tonsured a monk with the name in honor of Artemy, Great Martyr of Antioch.

On January 8, 1996, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite.

On February 4, 1996, in the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Minsk, Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus Philaret, in concelebration with members of the Synod of the Belarusian Orthodox Church, was consecrated Bishop of Grodno and Volkovysk.

From 1997 to 1998 Bishop Artemy was the chairman of the board of the Center for Orthodox Education in the name of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk.

Bishop Artemy of Grodno and Volkovysk is the chairman of the Youth Association of the Belarusian Orthodox Church. In accordance with his position, he oversees the Orthodox youth movement in Belarus. The Youth Association of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and its chairman in 2004 became laureates of the III Festival of Orthodox Youth “The New Generation”, which took place from September 5 to 6, 2004 in Moscow.

On September 9, 2004, by the decision of the Council of the Minsk Theological Academy named after St. Cyril of Turov, Bishop Artemy was awarded the degree of Candidate of Theology for his dissertation on the topic “Introduction to Orthodox Theology”.

In 2006 he entered the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw (Republic of Poland). At the end of the course in 2007, by the decision of the Council of the Academy, Bishop Artemy was awarded the degree of Master of Theology for his dissertation on the topic: “Problems of teaching the subject” Catechism “in the countries of the former Soviet Union.”

On July 8, 2012, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop.

On February 21, 2013 at the Warsaw Christian Theological Academy (Poland) he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Theology on the topic “History of the Grodno Orthodox Diocese in 1921-1939”.

Bishop Artemy of Grodno and Volkovysk is an associate professor at the Department of Biblical Studies and Christian Doctrine of the Institute of Theology of the Belarusian State University (the successor of the Faculty of Theology of YSU).

On June 9, 2021, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church considered the report of His Grace Metropolitan Veniamin of Minsk and Zaslavl, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, regarding the decision taken at the meeting of the Synod of the Belarusian Exarchate of June 8, 2021 to petition His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and the Holy Synod for the nomination to the repose of His Grace Archbishop Artemy of Grodno and Volkovysk for health reasons. The Holy Synod decided to retire the Right Reverend Archbishop Artemy of Grodno and Volkovysk for health reasons.
