About migration

The main purpose of the meeting between the US vice president and the Guatemalan president is to address the causes that drive irregular migration from Central America to the United States as it reaches critical dimensions in the region.

This will be Arévalo’s first trip to the United States as president, which highlights the importance of the meeting.

Prior to Arévalo’s visit to the White House, the president had a visit to Guatemalan territory from the Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Alejandro N. Mayorkas, on March 21.

During this meeting, issues of bilateral and multilateral interest were addressed, with a focus on the preparation of the agenda that will be discussed with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Arévalo confirmed that nine key points that represent areas of collaboration were reviewed with Mayorkas. In turn, the US Secretary reiterated his country’s support on various issues such as the fight against corruption, as well as the High Level Economic Dialogue, which was held prior to their meeting, which seeks to strengthen the economic development of the Central American country. .

After the various meetings with US officials in the field of security and economy of Guatemala, the rapprochement advances to Arévalo’s visit to the White House.

According to the White House, the fundamental objective will be to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries and advance their joint efforts to promote development, consolidate democracy and address “the root causes” of migration from Central America to the United States.

During the meeting, Harris and Arévalo are expected to discuss new initiatives to address the factors that fuel irregular migration, as well as improve citizen security, guarantee respect for human and labor rights, combat gender violence and generate more economic opportunities. .

Meeting with Leaders and regional meeting

Additionally, during their stay in the United States, Harris and Arévalo will participate in a meeting with government, business and civil society leaders within the framework of “Centroamérica Adelante”, a public-private alliance promoted by the US that has mobilized more of US$4.2 billion in private investments for Central America.

With the next regional meeting of ministers on migration to be organized by the Government of Guatemala in April, it is expected to coordinate a regional response to migratory flows on the continent.

Migration has been a central issue in the upcoming US presidential election, and President Joe Biden will seek re-election, highlighting the importance of finding effective and sustainable solutions to this challenge.
