An armed man fleeing police after a reported air rifle theft was shot dead by officers on Thursday afternoon beneath an overpass outside Auckland’s Sylvia Park shopping centre, triggering a major emergency response, mall lockdowns, and a critical incident investigation.
From Penrose Gun Shop Theft to East Auckland Chase
The sequence of events began shortly before 2pm on Thursday, when police received information about a theft of an air rifle from Gun City in Penrose. Gun City owner David Tipple told reporters that the man was being shown an air rifle before he grabbed the weapon and ran out of the store with three staff members in pursuit, according to reporting from 1News. One staff member managed to get close, but the suspect succeeded in driving away in a vehicle.
Patrol units and the Police Eagle helicopter were dispatched immediately. The aircraft located a white Suzuki Swift travelling near Sylvia Park. According to Auckland City District Commander Superintendent Sunny Patel, the vehicle was tracked heading into Pakuranga and entering the car park at Pakuranga Plaza before quickly exiting onto the Pakuranga Highway and driving erratically toward Panmure. Police units successfully deployed spikes as the vehicle continued in an erratic manner toward the Mount Wellington Highway.
Trapped at Sylvia Park and Confrontation Under the Overpass
The chase reached its climax when the vehicle became stranded on a traffic island at an intersection outside the country’s largest shopping mall in Mt Wellington. A witness at the traffic lights reported seeing the man drive up next to her, get out of the vehicle carrying a large gun, and begin walking toward her vehicle before fleeing on foot as police cars and the helicopter converged.
At approximately 2.50pm, the offender fled on foot carrying a long-barrelled air rifle onto the grounds of the shopping centre. Officers pursued him as he headed toward an entrance to the mall. Whilst still in possession of the air-rifle, he has been confronted underneath an overpass where he has been shot by police, Patel confirmed during an evening briefing. First aid was administered immediately, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inside the Mall Lockdown and Witness Accounts
While the confrontation unfolded outside, workers and shoppers inside Sylvia Park experienced rapid shifts from confusion to terror. Nandan, a manager at the mall’s Timberland store, described eating lunch in a back room when he heard screaming and unusual sounds before staff members ran inside warning that people were shooting.
Other retail workers reported hearing between four and five gunshots and seeing armed police officers with black vests, fire trucks, and helicopters through store windows. Mall management instituted a lockdown, with staff locking their doors and moving customers into secure back areas away from the retail floor. Witness George Heller told reporters he was loading groceries into his car when he saw a man running while chased by approximately eight armed officers before hearing three shots.

Police Response and Bail Status of the Deceased
Authorities have initiated a critical incident investigation into the shooting. Speaking to the media on Thursday evening, Superintendent Patel confirmed that the man was known to police but was not wanted at the time, and was under bail conditions that he had not breached. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the stolen air rifle was loaded or if the man fired it during the pursuit.
Police have notified the Independent Police Conduct Authority, standard procedure for fatal police operations. While a heavy police presence remained around the cordoned-off shopping complex into the evening, officials reiterated that the incident had concluded and there was no ongoing risk to public safety.

As investigators work to piece together the afternoon’s events, several crucial details remain unverified. Police have not yet publicly released the identity of the deceased man, awaiting formal next-of-kin notifications. Furthermore, authorities have not clarified whether officers pursuing the suspect were aware from the outset that the weapon involved was an air rifle rather than a lethal firearm, a distinction that is expected to form a central part of the critical incident inquiry.
