The court issued an arrest warrant for members of Lee Jae-myung’s presidential campaign who are suspected of interfering with a key witness’s perjury in the illegal political funding trial of Kim Yong, former vice president of the Korea Institute for Democracy.

Lee Min-soo, chief judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, said on the 15th that Mr. Park (45) and Mr. Seo (44) are accused of inciting perjury to Mr. Lee (64), former head of the Gyeonggi Metropolitan City Commerce Promotion Agency, who appeared as a witness in the trial of Kim Yong and gave false testimony. An arrest warrant was issued for Mr. ), saying, “There is concern about the destruction of evidence.”

The prosecution believes that they asked former director Lee to give false testimony and perjure him in order to hide the fact that Mr. Kim Yong-gyu received money and valuables from Mr. Yoo Dong-gyu (former head of the Seongnam Open Construction Planning Headquarters). Mr. Park and others are also accused of submitting a photo of a falsified calendar screen to the court (using forged evidence) together with Mr. Lee, Kim’s defense attorney, around May of last year.

Witness Lee, who received a request from Mr. Park and others, appeared as a witness at Kim Yong’s trial on May 4 last year and said, “On May 3, 2021, from 3:00 to 4:50 p.m., I met Mr. Kim Yong and others at my office at the Suwon Convention Center to discuss business. He is said to have testified to the effect that “we discussed it.” May 3, 2021, which Mr. Lee mentioned, is the date on which the prosecution suspects that Mr. Yong Kim met with Mr. Yoo Dong-gyu and received illegal political funds. The prosecution suspects that Mr. Park and others attempted to conceal the crime by creating a false alibi through perjury by Mr. Lee.

In the substantive examination of the warrant on this day, the prosecution said, “It is a serious crime that induced a misjudgment by the court through distortion of the substantive truth.” It is said that the need for arrest was emphasized to the effect that “this is a very important crime that disrupted the criminal justice system by concealing and obstructing the proper exercise of the state’s right to punishment.”
