Arrival of Van Persie comparable to Van Basten: “Someone is coming in man, say hello”

The arrival of Robin van Persie to sports club Heerenveen will have a major impact. That is what former player and coach Tieme Klompe thinks, who in the Sportcast of Omrop compares Fryslân with the appointment of Marco van Basten.

“The time to pick up Van Persie is now. Otherwise he would have signed with Feyenoord or higher up with another club,” Klompe responds to the news from the Leeuwarder Courant that Van Persie will be the new coach of Heerenveen for the next two years.

Klompe compares the appointment with that of that other former top striker who was coach of Heerenveen: Van Basten.

At that time, players really looked up to Van Basten, Klompe noticed, who was his assistant coach at the time. “They love that! How they looked up to Marco, that will now happen again with Van Persie,” says Klompe. “Someone’s coming in man, say hello.”

Harmen Kuperus was a goalkeeper coach in Van Basten’s technical staff. He remembers being invited by San Marco. “That first conversation, boy. That was exciting. But after a few minutes that was over.”

According to Kuperus, it is important that Van Persie has a good city around him. “The balance has to be good. That’s the problem now with Kees van Wonderen, I think.”

De Sneker was a goalkeeper coach at Go Ahead Eagles when Van Wonderen was coach there and therefore knows the trainer of the Frisian team well.

“We had a mix in the staff there. Two who were very critical and who ensured a balance in the trainer’s room, in terms of different thoughts. I have the feeling that that is not in balance now.”
