Annual review 2023

St. Pölten (OTS) For over 20 years, art in public spaces in Lower Austria (KOERNOE), as part of the Art and Culture Department of the Office of the Lower Austrian State Government, has been supporting communities, associations and institutions in the development, realization, presentation and communication of artistic projects in outdoor spaces. A total of around 600 works by national and international artists were realized, ranging from permanent sculpture to street furniture to the design of entire squares. Temporary or performative interventions, which are also created in collaboration with the population, play an equally important role.

In 2023, the network of works of art in public spaces, which is unique in Europe, was further developed with diverse projects and varied encounters in public spaces, and the educational program “Inventour” and unconventional formats aroused children and adults’ curiosity about the art happenings in outdoor spaces:

In the spring, the Weikendorf art space was transformed into an artistic and scientific field of exploration with the help of soil provided by the population, when Elisabeth Falkinger turned the art space into a constantly changing floral group painting in her “Germ Exploration”. In September, the “coloring book” by Robert Gabris and Theodor Moise was opened in the art room, whose walls filled with fantastic figures invite you to participate, so that the universe of hybrid creatures, animals and plants becomes constantly more colorful and diverse thanks to visitors who love painting. The next opening day is Sunday, January 7, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, a series of posters by Edith Payer framed the anniversary celebration “Ten Years of the Weikendorf Jury”.

There were also new projects both on the Iron Curtain Trail in Hohenau an der March, where Katrin Hornek enriched the group project “Super Nature” with her “Postindustrial Creatures”, and on Semmering, where Hedwig Saxenhuber once again organized a complex art course with works by Abdul Sharif Oluwafemi Baruwa, Mark Chehodaiev, Ines Doujak, Olha Horiunova and Toni Schmale curated the event, thereby turning Semmering into a contemporary stage. In Paasdorf, on the other hand, the sound atoll created by Andrea Sodomka and Martin Breindl in 1996 was restored and renewed so that the green earth wall can now once again connect nature and sound in a very special acoustic world.

In addition, the new website was completed in 2023, which now offers suggestions for virtual walks and an individual art visit to the over 600 implemented projects with interactive maps and a wealth of information and services. Similarly, the 14th KOERNOE volume documents all projects that were created between 2020 and 2022. Further projects are planned for 2024 in St. Pölten, around the Schallaburg, in Weikendorf, on the Iron Curtain Trail, in Mistelbach and in Korneuburg.
