Today, artificial intelligence has become an inescapable reality in our modern society, profoundly transforming our lives and becoming a fundamental pillar of any digital transformation.

Aware of its crucial role, the Tunisian artificial intelligence ecosystem is growing exponentially, and this digital revolution is strongly fueled by AI which plays a central role.

The month of June was marked by a proliferation of publications, discussions, initiatives and events at all levels: academic, associative and within public establishments.

More investment in AI

This artificial intelligence fever, driven by this booming ecosystem, will offer better chances for the country to improve its ranking in the Oxford Insights “Government AI Readiness Index” (currently 4th in Africa and 70th in the world among 181 countries). As a result, this will increase foreign investment opportunities in the field of AI in Tunisia. In this spirit, it is incumbent on the State to assume its role as the leading player in contributing to the achievement of this ambitious objective.

Thus, he can take several actions. First, include artificial intelligence in all education curricula, from schools to high schools, and raise awareness of AI applications in other disciplines such as medicine, finance and law. Then, it is possible to set up a collegiate body of experts in artificial intelligence or a regulatory body to oversee the use of this technology in Tunisia. Also, the State can create an institution dedicated to the promotion and development of AI in our country.

Among the events that have been undertaken in recent times, we can cite this list which may not be exhaustive. In terms of academic events, the “Espita”, school of engineering, organized on June 2, as part of the “JIBio2023” edition, the conference “BioAI: When biology meets artificial intelligence to revolutionize the healthcare industry”. From the 8th to the 10th of the same month, the “Artificial Intelligence National Summit – AINS 2023” was organized by the “computer society” section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (#Ieee).

Also on June 15, was held the conference “Generative artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT: What national strategy? To allow or prohibit? and how?”, organized by the Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts in Beit Al-Hikma

At the institutional level

On the 23rd of last month, Club Ieee RAS Insat Student Branch organized the 5th edition of “National Robotics Weekend” (NRW) in Gammarth under the theme of “Artificial Intelligence for Robotics”.

At the institutional level, other public events have also emerged, such as the conference on “Artificial Intelligence in Health”, organized by the Computer Center of the Ministry of Health (Cims) as part of the event “Scientific Day on digital health trends in Tunisia and around the world”.

As for associative events, we can also mention the Webinar “Generative AI, the new source of Creation”, organized by Tunisian AI Society “TAIS” and Reconnectt (founded by Sami Ayari) or the Webinar “Tunisia, l ‘AI in health: from definition to challenges and perspectives’, organized by IA News and moderated by Imed Hanana, co-founder of IA_NEWS.

A seminar on “Artificial Intelligence: ethical issues and social impacts” was also organized by “Globethics Mena Centre-Tunis” (founded by Kamel Ayadi).

The seminar “Digitalization of Artificial Intelligence services: opportunities and challenges”, organized by Essect Digital Services, was also held in June at the Training and Support Center for Decentralization (Cfad) in Tunis.

We must not forget the good number of articles that have been written on the subject of Artificial Intelligence. We can cite as an example some writings “ethics and governance of generative AI”, the interview of Racha Friji, doctor in artificial intelligence and researcher at Talan Innovation Factory, by DigiClubpowered by Topnet and Huawei Technologies “Here is why we must rationalize the use of AI” and the article “What governance for AI?”…
