Artificial intelligence tool found signs of cancer in patients that doctors had not seen – 2024-03-25 06:50:34

That’s because of an artificial intelligence tool called Mia, which was piloted alongside NHS clinicians and analyzed the mammograms of more than 10,000 women ‘looking’ for cancer.

The artificial intelligence (AI) tool tested by the UK’s NHS successfully found microscopic signs of breast cancer in 11 women who had ‘escaped’ doctors.

Most of those mammograms were clear, but the AI tool successfully flagged all of those with symptoms, as well as 11 more that doctors hadn’t spotted.

In their early stages, cancers can be extremely small and difficult to detect.

The BBC saw Mia in action at NHS Grampian, where it showed tumors that were practically invisible to the human eye. But, depending on their type, they can grow and spread quickly.

Barbara was one of 11 patients whose cancer was flagged by Mia but missed by hospital radiologists who reviewed her mammogram. Because her 6mm tumor was caught so early, she underwent surgery but only needed five days of radiation therapy.

Breast cancer patients with tumors that are smaller than 15 millimeters, when detected early, have a 90% survival rate for the next five years.

Without the help of AI, Barbara’s cancer might not have been detected until her next scheduled mammogram three years later. She herself had no noticeable symptoms.

Because they work instantaneously, tools like Mia also have the potential to cut the wait time for results from 14 days to three, claims its developer, Kheiron Medical.

None of the test cases were analyzed by Mia alone – all of them were also human tested.

Of the 10,889 women who took part in the trial, only 81 did not want the AI tool to look at their mammograms, said Dr Gerald Lip, clinical director of breast screening in north-east Scotland, who led the project.
