Actor Ashley Walters makes his feature directorial debut with Animol, a gritty prison drama releasing tomorrow through StudioCanal UK after premiering in the Berlinale Perspectives competition.
From Urban Television to Prison Realism
Best known for his decades of work in UK urban television and a standout lead role in last year’s hit Netflix series Adolescence, Walters brings personal history to his new project. The film is inspired by his own experiences after pleading guilty to a weapons charge in 2002. Written by regular collaborator Nick Love, Animol focuses on volatile young masculinity and the limitations of institutional caregiving.

The story follows Troy, played by Tut Nyuot, during his induction into a young offenders’ facility following a gang robbery that escalated into a conspiracy to murder charge. Alongside him in the holding antechamber are Krystian, a Polish immigrant jailed for burgling a library after hours, and Dion, an experienced inmate who assumes a kingpin role to continue dealing drugs.
Survival and Institutional Critique
Shot in widescreen by director of photography Tasha Back, the narrative remains tightly bound to Troy’s perspective. He is coerced by Dion into smuggling a phone and executing clandestine drug deliveries using a drone in an exterior back alley, while simultaneously forming a formative friendship with Krystian.
Despite featuring the acting presence of Stephen Graham as an on-site youth worker, the film offers a sharp critique of a correctional system that frequently forces inmates to replicate the very behaviors that landed them inside. Eschewing false uplift, the production avoids tidying up its narrative, closing instead on the lasting emotional scars Troy must carry.
