(Agence Ecofin) – The WHO estimates that 2.5 billion people will have hearing problems by 2050. In Kenya, a tech entrepreneur has implemented a solution to make life easier for the hearing impaired.

AssistALL is a digital solution developed by the Kenyan firm Signs Media, which allows people with hearing loss to benefit from the services of a sign language interpreter. It was launched in 2022 by Luke Muleka.

« During the Covid-19 pandemic, the obligation to wear a mask that conceals half of the face has completely isolated deaf and hard of hearing people. Overnight, they found themselves unable to communicate with their interpreters. This is when the idea of developing assistALL was born. ».

The user must register on the Android mobile application (the iOS version is in development) and configure their account before being able to access the interpreters of the platform. Companies or commercial entities that use the app to promote the integration of their staff with aphonia or deafness have the status of corporate users.

The Kenyan start-up charges 30 Kenyan shillings (about $0.22) per minute, and you must first top up your wallet before using the service. Simply click on the “Transactions” tab and follow the instructions to top up the account via M-Pesa, PayPal or by Visa card.

In March 2023, the start-up claimed over 7,000 users. Its app has already been downloaded more than 5,000 times, according to Play Store data. It aims to develop its AI to then invest in the Egyptian, South African and Nigerian markets.
