Prolonged exposure to weightlessness is not without health risks and can even cause erectile dysfunction, according to a recent study.

Stays beyond the atmospheres and celestial bodies might well deter many candidates for space travel exposed in addition to the prospect of death in the interstellar void.

American researchers have concluded that cosmic rays have an impact on the sexual health of astronauts following a trip to space, according to a study published in the journal “The FASEB Journal”.

The scientists experimented with a group of rats suspended from harnesses and another kept on the ground to simulate microgravity, while some rodents were exposed to galactic cosmic rays in a simulator, Geo magazine reported Tuesday .

Researchers noted a narrowing of blood vessels observed in the penis of rodents exposed to cosmic radiation over a period of one year, according to the same study.

Microgravity might thus play a role in these erectile disorders, even if with a limited impact, according to scientists who specify that one year of experience on rats would correspond to several decades for humans.
