At least 12 people died, including six women, and more than 15 were injured after the bus they were traveling in plunged into a chasm on a remote rural road in northern Peru, authorities said.
“Currently there are 12 dead and more than fifteen injured. We are still here at the scene of the events working, providing all the support together with the police, health personnel and the prosecutor’s office, Carlos Oyola, mayor of the Fitzcarrald province in the Andean region of Ancash, told RPP radio.
The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when a bus overturned and rolled into a 100-meter abyss on the longitudinal highway of the Conchucos district in Ancash.
The bus was heading from the Yauya district to Lima, according to the AFP news agency.
“According to the testimony of residents, the vehicle lost its way from the road, spinning violently,” added the mayor.
The injured were transferred to the Huaraz regional hospital, while the reasons for the accident are under investigation.
