At least four people have been trampled to death in a stampede at a university in southern India. Dozens more were injured in Saturday’s incident at a partially covered outdoor stage on the grounds of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in the southwestern state of Kerala, local officials and media reported. Accordingly, a concert was supposed to take place there in the evening.

Governor Arif Mohammed Khan said on the online service X, formerly Twitter, that he was “deeply shocked” by “the sad demise of four students”. The news agency PTI quoted Kerala Health Minister Veena George as saying that a total of 60 people were injured, four of them critically.

According to PTI, a local police official said people outside the venue were taking shelter during a sudden downpour when some of them slipped on the stairs and were then trampled to death.
