Waldoniton de Andrade Reis, 43, died after swallowing a bee during cycling training in Manaus (AM). The man was a professional rowing athlete at the Clube do Remo and also enjoyed cycling with his friends.

The tragedy happened on the edge of Ponta Negra beach, in Manaus, on March 2. Waldoniton suffered anaphylactic shock due to an allergic reaction after he swallowed the insect.

On the day, before having the allergic reaction, Waldoniton told people trying to help him that he had swallowed the bee during practice. The athlete spent more than three minutes without oxygenation in the brain.

A relative of the athlete said that he waited a long time for first aid care. He stayed for about 20 minutes with difficulty breathing, the situation made his health condition even worse at the scene.

The family member also said that after people’s desperation to try to help, a sergeant from the Fire Department arrived at the place where Waldoniton was and managed to revive him.

The athlete was taken to a nearby Emergency Room, then taken to the ICU at the Delphina Aziz Hospital and Emergency Room, where he was hospitalized for 21 days until brain death was confirmed on March 23.

Waldoniton was twice North-Northeast Champion with the Club Remo team, a tournament held in Brasília. On social media, the athlete was dedicated to his family and friends and recorded moments of achievement in sports.
