Mujinga Kambundji missed his case in the 200m final at the Eugene Worlds. The Bernese could not avoid 8th and last place, with a modest time of 22”55. The title went to Jamaican Shericka Jackson, who set the second best time in history in 21”45.
Placed in lane 1 with Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah in sight, Mujinga Kambundji nevertheless got off to an excellent start for her sixth race in six days. But the bronze medalist of the 2019 Worlds over the distance did not hold the shock, remaining 50 hundredths from her Swiss record established in the semi-finals.
Fifth in the 100m in these games, Mujinga Kambundji can, despite this disappointment, be delighted to have played a 5th consecutive individual final in an outdoor intercontinental championship. The Bernese, 6th (100m) and 7th (200m) at the Tokyo Olympics, dreams of concluding these 2022 Worlds in style with the 4x100m. She will be resting on Saturday morning during the semi-finals (scheduled for 2:40 a.m. Swiss time) of this relay.
Favorite for the title, Shericka Jackson flew over the debates in this final. She missed Florence Griffith-Joyner’s world record by only 0”11, ahead of her runner-up and compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce by 0”36. Bronze went to Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith (22”02), Elaine Thompson-Herah having to settle for 7th place in 22”39.
