Shooting incidents in the United States have become commonplace, and they occur in schools, grocery stores, churches, and this time they turned out to be in hospitals. A shooting occurred in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on Wednesday (3rd). A man opened fire in a hospital in Midtown, causing at least 1 death and 4 injuries.

The incident took place at Northside Hospital Medical in Midtown. Police confirmed the shooting took place in a hospital waiting room. The shooter, identified as 24-year-old Deion Patterson, fled the building after opening fire and is believed to have hijacked a car nearby.

A high-ranking Atlanta Police Department source told CNN that the gunman, who had arrived at the hospital with his mother, became agitated and opened fire. The identity of the victim has not yet been released. It is reported that one of the victims is the suspected gunman’s mother, but the police clarified that the gunman’s mother was not injured and is currently cooperating with the police.

The gunman was identified as a former Coast Guard member. The Coast Guard statement pointed out that Patterson entered the Coast Guard in July 2018 and last served as the second electrician chief mate. He has retired in January 2023. The Coast Guard said it was working closely with Atlanta police and other authorities investigating the shooting.

Since the gunman is armed and dangerous, hundreds of heavily armed police are currently on the scene to respond. Police are currently evacuating the building and are urging others to stay away from the incident.

Including today’s shooting, there have been at least 190 mass shootings in the United States this year.
