Atlanta/Radolfzell/Stockach: Schoolgirl from Radolfzell proves her scientific talent in the USA

Helen Hauck from Radolfzell not only prevailed against her competitors in the Jugend forscht competition. She is currently also able to demonstrate her scientific skills in the USA. Because she is one of 14 German prize winners who are allowed to take part in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (Regeneron ISEF) in Atlanta.

This emerges from a statement by the Jugend forscht foundation. This will take place until tomorrow Friday and is one of the largest international pre-academic science competitions for schoolchildren. There are more than 1800 young scientists from 80 countries, all of whom have already proven themselves in scientific competitions.

The German team presented nine creative research projects in the Georgia World Congress Center. Helen Hauck dedicated her project to the Indian Balsam. The 19-year-old extracted the ingredients from the leaves of the plant and discovered the substance 2M-NQ it contained. And she has the talent.

Because: In the future, it could serve as the basis for a biochemical spray that can be used to effectively combat the widespread box tree moth. The high school graduate from the Nellenburg-Gymnasium in Stockach made second place with her discovery in Jugend forscht, beating out 167 competitors.

In her project, she was supported by the two supervisors Ceren Karayel and Marion Lay-Koch. Both are teachers at the Nellenburg-Gymnasium.

Winners will be announced on Friday

At the competition in Atlanta, young researchers from all over the world compete in 21 scientific and technical competition categories. According to the announcement, prizes and scholarships with a total value of almost five million US dollars are up for grabs. The winners of the various categories will be announced at the Grand Awards Ceremony on Friday evening, May 13th.

Because of the corona pandemic, not all participants have traveled to the USA, but are taking part in the competition online. Because the competition will take place as a hybrid event this year. (pm)
