ATP Rotterdam: Holger Rune falls against Gijs Brouwer, 160th in the world, on abandonment

Two of the main favorites of the Rotterdam tournament were knocked out in the round of 16 on Thursday evening. After Stefanos Tsitsipas a few hours earlier, the Danish Holger Rune, seeded number 4, suffered the law of the 160th in the world, Gijs Brouwer (note: guest for this 2023 edition) before finally giving up at the end of the second set (6 -4, 4-0) because of a wrist injury.

It all started well for the Scandinavian, who quickly led 4-2 in the first set. But the pain was too strong and the current ninth player in the world saw the Dutchman play eight games. It was too much for Holger Rune, who threw in the towel after 1:13 of the match. In the quarter-finals, Gijs Brouwer will find his compatriot Tallon Griekspoor, also invited and author of an XXL performance against Alexander Zverev on Wednesday evening.

A little earlier in the evening, Jannik Sinner created the surprise by dominating Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded N.1 (6-4, 6-3) but also finalist of the last Australian Open, and qualified for the quarter-finals where he will face the Swiss Stan Wawrinka. This confrontation between two of the men in form at the start of the season looked like a final before the letter.

Indeed, Jannick Sinner, 14th at the ATP, opened his victory counter in 2023 last weekend by winning the Montpellier tournament. This Thursday, the Italian was able to count on an excellent first ball, never conceding his service game unlike his opponent, broken three times. The other poster of the quarter-finals will oppose Felix Auger-Aliassime, defending champion, to the Russian Daniil Medvedev. (With AFP)
