Attacking Rendi-Wagner in a three-way battle | SN.at

The three-way battle for the SPÖ leadership brought an indirect media showdown on Wednesday. The applicants for party leadership each gave half-hour interviews on Puls24 and re-broadcast their largely known messages via television. What was particularly striking was how aggressively the incumbent Pamela Rendi-Wagner acted against the Burgenland governor Hans Peter Doskozil.

She sees no conflict at all between herself and Doskozil. This has a conflict with the party. Finally, Doskozil withdrew from the committees. At some point you have to acknowledge “that he is not willing to cooperate”. After the party conference in June, however, “the ego trips” must really come to an end.

Rendi-Wagner also accused her Burgenland opponent of having been against bringing children from the desolate Moria refugee camp to Austria, which he later justified with the desire at the time for a Europe-wide solution. In addition, the party leader attested the Doskozil course to be unsuccessful. The state parties in Salzburg and Lower Austria were on this road without clear demarcation from the FPÖ: “That hurts.”

Rendi-Wagner rejects the fact that her opponents are only fixated on government cooperation with the Greens and NEOS and thus exclude the ÖVP as a partner: “I don’t believe in being in opposition for another six years”. It doesn’t look that rosy with a traffic light majority either, she referred to the exit of NEOS in the Salzburg state parliament.

Doskozil, on the other hand, said that the chance of a majority from SPÖ, Greens and NEOS is currently greater than ever. While Rendi-Wagner and Traiskirchen Mayor Andreas Babler once again focused on reducing working hours, the governor ranked this behind the 2,000 euro minimum wage. Doskozil repeatedly emphasized that he implemented this in Burgenland. His opponents set themselves apart by emphasizing that they were also in favor of the minimum wage, but that it was negotiated by the social partners rather than by law.

If Doskozil has its way, the SPÖ will need credibility again. If you also implement projects such as the minimum wage or the employment of caring relatives and not just announce them, you will also be elected, the governor reminded of his absolute majority. Doskozil wants to bring “enthusiasm and self-confidence” back into the party. The SPÖ will not tear it apart with him at the top, he answered a corresponding question.

Doskozil was pleased that former Chancellor Christian Kern supported him. He wants to use his economic, financial and foreign policy expertise. Rendi-Wagner described the fact that Kern was the only living head of government not to join her as a “human disappointment”. Doskozil actively addressed his voice problems. If he could change something about himself with a snap, “then I would have a voice like Caruso”.

Babeler emphasized that the SPÖ had to end polarization. He is running because he was in a “permanent frustration situation” with the members. It is important to create “an alternative counter-image with heart and soul and pride”.

The SPÖ has distanced itself from people’s realities of life, the mayor analyzed. In one generation, the party was halved. His goal is to prevent Herbert Kickl and to implement reform projects beyond black and blue. Babeler wants to convince FPÖ and non-voters. While Rendi-Wagner and Doskozil explicitly rejected Tempo 100, the third candidate supports it, although “not with the highest priority”.

The three candidates were questioned in separate interviews as Doskozil declined a direct confrontation. He justifies this by saying that one does not want to offer the public any inner-party spectacle.
