Attempted Assassinations: Author Prosecuted as Thirty People Evacuated in Roeselare Hostage Situation

A 53-year-old man who took his ex-girlfriend hostage was arrested on Friday evening in Roeselare and will face an examining magistrate for an attempted assassination prevention charge, as confirmed by the Kortrijk division of the West Flanders prosecution on Saturday. Around thirty people from various homes in the area were evacuated by the police as a precaution. The suspect was caught around 11 pm. The West Flanders prosecutor’s office stated on Saturday that the man, who is being held for burglary, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, will be presented to an examining magistrate. The ex-partner was injured in the ordeal, but her life is not in danger.

As a precaution, the police had proceeded Friday evening to the evacuation of about thirty people coming from several houses of the district. The suspect was finally apprehended around 11:00 p.m.

The 50-year-old will be presented to an examining magistrate, the West Flanders prosecutor’s office announced on Saturday morning. The man is suspected not only of burglary and unlawful deprivation of liberty, but also of the attempted murder of his ex-partner. The woman was injured in the incident, but her life is not in danger.
