The Egyptian authorities said, on Monday, that the video circulating on social media regarding a Korean tourist being subjected to an attempted harassment by someone dates back to 2022, and that the perpetrator of the incident was sentenced to aggravated imprisonment.

The clip spread on social media on Sunday, in which a Korean tourist documented an attempt by a man to harass him inside a shrine in an area of ancient cemeteries.

The Ministry of Interior accused the Muslim Brotherhood, which is classified as a “terrorist” group in Egypt, of being behind the spread of the video, “trying to create confusion by falsifying the facts by re-publishing old videos.”

The ministry said in a statement: “During the month of April 2022, the Korean tourist submitted a report to the Manshiyet Nasser Police Department in the Cairo Security Directorate, during which he was harmed by a person who tried to harass him in the Qaitbay Cemetery area.”

She added, “The perpetrator of the incident, a dual national, was identified and arrested at the time. Legal measures were taken against him and a five-year aggravated prison sentence was issued against him. He is currently in one of the correction and rehabilitation centers in implementation of the ruling.”
