New Zealand police are investigating a murder after a family found human remains in suitcases bought at a warehouse auction. Police were called to a house in the Clendon Park neighborhood south of Auckland on Friday. The foul smell of the suitcases that had been bought at the auction quickly aroused the suspicions of the new owners.
The police set up tents in front of the family home and unpacked their suitcases. According to the first findings of the forensic scientists, the body parts could be the remains of several victims, as the New Zealand news portal «Stuff» reported. Coroners are currently trying to identify the deceased.
Family is not suspected
The family had bought the goods from a local storage company a few days earlier. The suitcases and other items had not been picked up from the warehouse and the bill for storing them had not been paid for a long time.
When a trailer with the goods was parked in front of the family home on Thursday, one of the neighbors immediately noticed the smell of decay. The man had worked in a crematorium for a long time. “I knew immediately where that came from,” he told a reporter while pointing to the family’s property.
The residents of the house are not suspected in this case. A family member said the authorities offered them victim assistance. The owner of the “Safe Store Papatoetoe” warehouse is also shocked.
Ex-policeman suspects perpetrator fled New Zealand
Lance Burdett was a police officer for 22 years and led several murder investigations. He feels sorry for the family: “Anyone who experiences such situations can never forget them, you can never do something like this unseen,” he said to “Newshub».
In his opinion, the police could be dealing with multiple crime scenes. The experienced police officer also believes that the perpetrator has already left New Zealand. It is not known whether the local police are linked to Interpol.
