August Surge: Houston Astros Defeat Boston Red Sox 6-2 with Back-to-Back Homers

BOSTON — Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez hit back-to-back first-inning homers as the Houston Astros continued their August resurgence, beating the Boston Red Sox 6-2 Tuesday night.

Mauricio Dubón added a two-run double in the sixth for the Astros, who kept pace in the tough race for the AL West pennant. They started the night a game behind leader Seattle.

The Astros took a 3 1/2-game lead over Toronto for the final wild-card playoff berth in the AL. They are one percentage point below Texas, which currently has the second ticket.

Since last week, when they lost three straight — including two losses to the Red Sox in Houston — the last World Series champions have won four times, scoring 45 runs during the streak.

JP France (10-5) covered 5 2/3 innings, holding Boston to two runs and five hits, walking one and striking out three.

Brayan Bello (10-8) took the loss.
