Austin Named Best College Town in America for 2027 by WalletHub

Austin has once again topped an annual list comparing the best college towns in America for 2027. Outshining contenders like Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, for five years in a row in WalletHub’s annual report, the Texas capital claims dominance not just in the overall standings, but at the top of the large cities category as well.

Weighing Economic Muscle Against the Cost of Living

The annual ranking evaluates 415 U.S. cities across 31 key metrics divided into three core pillars: wallet-friendliness, social environment, and academic and economic opportunities. Austin’s latest triumph rests heavily on its bustling job market and robust educational infrastructure. The city commands the 15th-best academic and economic opportunities for students and graduates, paired with the 16th-best social environment in the nation.

Analysts highlight the local economy as a primary engine for this success. Austin boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates nationwide alongside the 34th-best annual job growth rate. For students balancing coursework with career ambitions, the environment offers a seamless bridge into the post-graduation workforce. Furthermore, the city ranks 22nd in the country for the sheer quality of higher education among the hundreds of municipalities studied.

Yet, the glittering economic indicators obscure a glaring hurdle: affordability. While the region shines in employment prospects, its wallet-friendliness leaves much to be desired. Financial accessibility places Austin at 188th, an index that weighs variables like per-capita student debt, local housing expenses, the youth-adjusted cost of living, and other economic elements. In-state tuition, including room and board, is $34,651 annually, placing it 112th on the cost spectrum.

“Picking the right college is crucial, but it’s also important to make sure that the surrounding college town will be a place where you’ll truly love spending your college years,” said Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, in a statement. “Towns with a low cost of living, plenty of activities and large student populations can make your college experience a lot less stressful and a lot more enjoyable. In addition, cities with a great economic environment can make it easier to get a job during or immediately after college.”

The Institutional Landscape Across Central Texas

Beyond the presence of the University of Texas at Austin, the metropolitan area anchors a diverse ecosystem of higher education. Students across the region fill classrooms at Concordia University, Huston-Tillotson University, St. Edward’s University, Southwestern University in Georgetown, and Texas State University in San Marcos.

Central Texas is further unified by the Austin Community College district, which caters to learners across independent school districts and standalone campuses located in places like Lockhart, Kyle, Elgin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Leander.

This dense concentration of academia contrasts sharply with runners-up like Ann Arbor, Michigan, which claimed the second overall spot while ranking 12th nationally for educational quality with an average annual in-state tuition, including room and board, of $36,932. Charlottesville, Virginia, secured third place, followed by Raleigh, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia, rounding out the top five.

How the Lone Star State Stacks Up Statewide

Austin’s victory spearheads a broader showing for Texas across the national index. Seven other Lone Star cities secured positions on the overall list of America’s best college towns, showcasing a statewide footprint in higher education infrastructure. College Station claimed No. 37, followed by Plano at No. 54, San Antonio at No. 72, Houston at No. 73, Denton at No. 77, Lubbock at No. 83, and Fort Worth at No. 100.

Meanwhile, Austin neighbor San Marcos earned the No. 2 best small college town in Texas and 54th best among the small colleges nationally.
