A Apple announced another expansion of the resource Emergency SOS via satellitethis time for two countries: Australia e New Zealand. The functionality, it is worth remembering, was initially launched in the United States and Canada – and has already contributed to the rescue of several people.

Available in the two countries of Oceania starting today, the Emergency SOS via satellite allows users of iPhones 14 communicate with emergency services — in the case of Australia, the Triple Zero — when they don’t have access to a mobile network or Wi-Fi.

The feature isn’t just useful for emergency calls, as it can also be used to update a user’s location in the Find My app (Find My), if friends and/or family want to join you.

Australian Communications Minister Michelle Rowland welcomed the country’s launch of the feature and insisted that Australians should be “encouraged to familiarize themselves with this feature”.

the administration of [Anthony] Albanese welcomes the launch of this innovative security capability. Australians are well aware of the importance of staying connected in regional, rural and remote areas, especially when they need emergency services. The ability to contact Triple Zero via Satellite Emergency SOS when there is no mobile coverage is a strong backup to keeping Australians connected in an emergency. This will greatly assist emergency services in responding, protecting and ultimately keeping individuals safe from harm. Australians are encouraged to familiarize themselves with this feature and check that their devices support it.

As in other regions, the service will be free for two years from the moment of activation of the device — in the case of users who already have a compatible device, this period starts counting from today. It is worth noting that the Emergency SOS via satellite requires minimally the iOS 16.4.

The launch in Australia and New Zealand follows previous expansions of the feature to several countries in Europe, including Portugal. There is still no prediction of when the functionality will arrive in Brazil.
