Walloon Brabant is currently affected by roof moss removal, a type of scam that returns with the approach of fine weather, the Walloon Brabant police zones said in a joint statement on Monday.
Pseudo moss removers and roof repairers are currently rampant in the province of Walloon Brabant. Faced with this phenomenon, the Walloon Brabant police want to raise awareness among the population, including the elderly who are a privileged target for the perpetrators.
“If this scam is not new, it returns with the good weather. The perpetrators go to rather elderly victims and manage to convince them that the roof of their dwelling is damaged or that it needs to be de-mossed, by presenting them with a piece of tile which they say comes from the roof.“, warn the police.
Regarding the operating methods used by the crooks, the sums requested to carry out the work are staggering, often exceeding a thousand euros.
Fake professionals use a card reader with which they withdraw more money than the sum initially planned and announced. They also proceed to several withdrawals, claiming that the first attempts have failed.
Some scammers also find excuses to enter the home and, when one of the perpetrators distracts the victim, another searches the premises for money and valuables to steal.
Among other advice, the Walloon Brabant police invite the population to denounce these acts by providing them with a description of the perpetrators and noting the registration numbers of their vehicles.
