In the face of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the international community is closely watching whether Xi Jinping will also launch an attack on Taiwan. Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton said earlier that it would do everything in its power to stop China’s aggression in the region and would ship arms to Taiwan.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (abc.net.au) reported that Dutton confirmed that missiles and ammunition provided by Western countries including Australia had now arrived in Ukraine. “We want to see the Ukrainians cost the Russians dearly, their reputation discredited, and their vaunted military might be thwarted,” he said.

As for whether to arm Taiwan as well, Mr Dutton said: “I think we will do everything we can to stop Chinese aggression in our region.”

“Let’s be clear! We want regional peace, but if you’re in a vulnerable position trying to argue, there’s no real peace,” Dutton said.

“It would be ridiculous to pretend the problem didn’t happen. … The problem has happened and China is amassing a huge force,” Dutton said.

Senator James Paterson, chairman of the Australian parliament’s intelligence and security committee, also said: “I hope China will learn from Putin’s difficulties in Ukraine, and any plan to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait by force may also be stronger than they have previously imagined. More complicated. I hope it makes them stop and think.”
