Starting at 8:00 a.m. European time on April 9th, it will be clear who will snatch pole position for the Australian Grand Prix. The last ten years have shown that the best starting position is not the best starting position.
After the free practice sessions, the impression remains: If you want to be on pole position in 2022, you have to be in a Ferrari or in a Red Bull Racing car – Sainz and Leclerc ahead of Pérez and Verstappen in the first practice session, Leclerc ahead of Max and Sainz in the second practice session (Pérez fifth behind Alonso).
How important is the best grid position for a win at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit? A look at the statistics shows that in the last ten Australian GPs (2010 to 2019), the eventual winner only started from pole position twice. In 2011 Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing) won from first place on the grid, and he did so in 2015 Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes.
Of the 25 World Championship races in Melbourne so far, only nine have been won from pole, plus 15 from the front row of the grid.
